16世纪，“fancy”是“love (爱情)”的意思，那么，“fancy-free”当然就是“没有谈恋爱”。17世纪，“footloose”用来形容“自由、没有羁绊”的样子。这个词很形象，“foot+loose（脚松绑）”了，当然就可以随心所欲得到出走动了。到了19世纪，footloose和fancy-free自然而然走到了一起，表示“你完全自由了，不受地域、工作或家事的羁绊”。
